Flex plate/flywheel spacer

Recommended Posts

When I removed the flex plate off of my donor motor there was a thin spacer between it and the crank, do i need this spacer when i install my flywheel? If you guys want/need a picture of what I'm talking about let me know.

Not sure if you're doing a conversion but you should reuse that spacer, if it's just a flexplate swap you're current plate probably has the spacers I just use them instead . I think my 95 motor from a junk yard had two spacers front and back of the flex plate.

I figure it help keep the flex-plate in the right position for the CPS or something.

A flex plate is thin, <<1/8".  Having a spacer/washer diffuses the force of the mounting points so the flexplate doesn't over stress and crack around the bolt holes.

A flywheel is thick cast iron, you could probably hold it on with 3 mounting bolts, securely, but don't.  It does not need anything to balance the torque between bolt holes.

Also, the flexplate bolts are going to be shorter than flywheel bolts.  Different animal.  If you're going from auto to manual you'll be using a flywheel.  If you're going auto to auto, keep the washer and use it on a flexplate.  New flexplates don't come with the washer, flywheels don't need a washer.

I'm pretty certain you are referring to part number 20 in the parts manual illustration. It's called a "reinforcement," not a spacer, and it doesn't go between the flex plate and the flywheel, it goes outside of (behind) the flex plate.

Yup that's it. So it's not necessary in manual transmission application
