quaddub_comanche
Hey Guys, So I've got a couple of weird issues going on, here's the back story on my 89 2wd 4.0L: I've been starting up and driving my Jeep around the neighborhood about once a week, regularly, with no issues. I decided to change the ancient brakes last week, no big deal, got new pads/rotors/bearings put on. Hopped in to take it for a test drive, backed out of the driveway just fine, put it in drive and it would BARELY move forward unless I gave it a lot of gas. Once it shifted to 2nd it drove fine until I slowed back down and it would just crawl. Manually shifting it into 1-2 it drives normal again. Thinking the tranny is toast, I google around and find that possibly the TPS sensor is bad. I have had a couple small idling issues so today I replaced the TPS hoping for a cheap fix. Start it up, idle sounds better, but still crawling in drive...Figure I'll take it for a short drive using the manual 1-2 method to give the computer some time to adapt. Turn it off for a few mins while I clean up, go back out and now it won't start. Cranks and cranks but no start. Oh, maybe I just got a bad TPS (BWD from Oreillys)...put the old one back in and still won't start...checked and double checked the vacuum lines around the TPS and nothing got pulled out..everything seems connected correctly. Any ideas? I'm getting spark and fuel. No idea why it started up one second and not the next... :wall:
cruiser54
How did you adjust the TPS? Is the fuse blown/corroded at the tCU?
quaddub_comanche
I used your tip to adjust the TPS down to 17% output. Fuse on the TCM under the dash looks good. Unplugged and replugged, it was clean. Still no start. I guess it's time to test the CPS? It'll get to that when the ground dries up, we had floods all day today down here. quaddub_comanche
Have you done tip 5? I did tip 5 with my meter set to 20ohm range and it was reading 6.7 (this seems high if I want it close to 0). Wiggling the various harnesses had no change. Went ahead and did tip 6 again too. Replaced CPS for the hell of it...just to rule it out for the future. Still no start. Thank you for all of your help so far.
cruiser54
6.7 is high. Tip 1 done?
quaddub_comanche
6.7 is high. Tip 1 done? Whoops, I lied when I said I had done Tip 6, I meant I had done Tip 1. Started on Tip 6 today. I got the split loom removed and found where I need to solder. While I was waiting for my buddy to bring over his soldering iron I decided to try and start it and IT STARTED! I guess wiggling the wires again helped out. Went ahead and finished Tip 6 and everything is back to normal. I really should have done all of these tips at the beginning...like everyone says to do...am now kicking myself. Thanks again for all of your help man! Thanks for driving home (pun intended) the need for doing the Tips FIRST. 1 through 5 for sure and 27 is highly recommended on an 87 and 88. 1,3,4, and 5 for sure on an 89 and 90.
