Timing issue?

So I recently rebuilt my engine, I have it all back together now and it cranks... But will not start. I'm am getting occasional backfires. I have fuel and spark but no significant results. Suggestions?

You probably set the distributor in the block wrong.

 

Look over this and check over your work.  It's how I've done many, successfully.

Spot on sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar, I had the distributor 180 degrees off, so I thought I had set it properly but it wasn't aligned with the damper mark. Now I just need to figure out why my brand new power steering pump is squealing like a stuck pig and blew the return line off!

Yes they are in the correct spot I believe. I will post pictures shortly

I'm not sure then... Perhaps a blockage somewhere in the system?

Perhaps, I have a new one on the way so hopefully that one will work out.
