jared Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 i was just wondering what the differences betwwen the 2 trannys? i know the ax5 is a 4cyl and the ax15 is a 6 cyl. but is the ax15 a lot better. how about the gear ratios?
JOMJ87 Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 I know the 15 is a stronger tranny but as far as ratios the only thing i might think of is there may be a a higher ratio in the 15 due to the more power of the 4.0. Cole
Eagle Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 They are both 5-speeds and 5th gear is an overdrive. The ratios aren't spot-on the same, but pretty close. I can look them up if you really need the exact numbers, but I don't have them handy.
87manche Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 ax5=light duty ax15=medium duty. bellhousings are remarkably similar, but not the same.
JeepcoMJ Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 ...bellhousings aren't even close between the two. the ax5 can only be used on the 4 cylinder 2.5's, and the 2.8 v6's. they were also used on the 2.1 Renault Turbo Diesel, BUT that version is not interchangeable between the diesel and gas powered ones due to the different input shaft and different bellhousing. the ax15 can be equipped with a 60 degree gm bellhousing (2.5 and 2.8 pattern) out of a dodge dakota, and it's a highly recommended swap. I have had my fill of ax5's, and if you do anything more than road driving, it's very similar to the dana 35...no longer a question of IF it will fail, but WHEN. you can't put the ax5 onto a 4.0 in any situation unless you have an expensive adapter.
