Transmission issue

Recommended Posts

Started having a odd problem but not sure it's the tranny going bad. 1987 comanche 2.5 auto.

Can be driving down the roar at highway speed and when in drive it acts like it's in neutral and revs up it you can slow down or stop shut it off and then back on and all is good for a couple mile and then does it again. Also you and pull it down in 3rd and it's fine. Checked fluid and looks good not burnt. Anybody had this issue and can help I sure would appreciate it. Thanks Brandon

Sounds like the torque converter isn't locking up and/or is unlocking. Don't really know how to address that, though.

Out of curiosity, how does it behave if you unplug the trans computer and try to shift manually?

The trans computer is under the passenger side of the dash, on the back of the small lower panel that runs all the way across, about where the passenger's left knee would be. With it unplugged, you'll need to do your own shifting. Put the shifter in 2-1 for first gear, 3 for third, and D for overdrive. Remember to shift down again on the way back down, and yes, you can't use second gear without the tcu plugged in. P, R, and N should all function normally.
