ax 15 Clutch

Recommended Posts

I had a guy replace my clutch in my '92. I bought a Tranny a couple years back and it came with a new clutch kit minus slave cylinder which I bought. The trans was from a 95 wrangler. I went to rock auto and all part numbers matched, but the guy who went to put it in said the flywheel would not work because of a pin? So he out the old one back in and said that it was in good shape anyway. I had to bleed it when I brought it home and will have to again here today or tomorrow. After a decent drive of going through the gears yesterday I started hearing a noise around where the trans bolts up to the motor and it became difficult to shift as if the clutch did not work properly (why I will bleed it this evening). The noise was only when I was using the accelerator. It did not make noise when I let out of the pedal. Would anyone have an idea of what this could be before I pull the trans again or has anyone had a similar problem? It only makes a noticeable noise when I had had to bleed the clutch again. I have put 130 miles on it since the fix, so bleeding it is just a bug that I am trying to get 100% correct.

I am guessing you have the external slave since the trans was from a 95 YJ.

Sound to me like either the trans is not lined up properly or the release bearing is bad.  If it is the second, then you have no option but to drop the trans.

Things to do first would be to look at the bell housing and make sure it is firmly attached to the engine - no gaps and the bolts are tight.

Have a helper with you.  Start the engine.  With the trans in neutral have them press in the clutch and release it.  You should get underneath and listen to the sound changes. Note where the noise is the loudest.

Internal slave. The transmission is original to the truck. I bought the wrangler tranny before I purchased this truck because I was starting to get things together for a swap on my '88. I will throw it on the lift this evening and double check things again and then have someone run it for me and listen. Thanks for the tips!
