Radiator and Transmission cooler

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm trying to do some repairs on my 1991 Eliminator. I don't have a lot in the way of mechanical experience so I'll explain the best I can. I got in a small collision and ended up pushing the grille and rad back towards the block. The block looks fine but in my quest for replacement parts I'm a little confused as to whether or not I have to buy the rad and tranny cooler as two separate parts or not. I haven't gotten the rad out yet but I wanted to know if anyone has had to do a total swap and very minor rebuild on the front end of their jeep before. I'm trying to get it drivable again in as short of time as possible but i don't personally know anyone experienced with mjs and xjs.

Any info or links to resources is greatly appreciated, I'm sort of learning as I go doing the little repairs on my truck.

Thank you

Is yours an Automatic Trans ? Replacement radiators will have an auto trans cooler built into them. They are usually sufficient for most driving. Also, you would be in a cooler climate.

Now you can add an auxiliary transmission cooler for several reasons. One would be if you plan to do some or a lot of off roading, or even a lot of city traffic. You'd be doing a lot of low speed so not a lot of air flow through the radiator. The fans will help thought. Another is to extend the life of the transmission and the fluid. Reduced fluid temp will help longevity of both fluid and transmission.

It should also help if you have having a hot running engine.

I am planning to add an Aux trans cooler to one of my XJs. Might add one to the other, but I am selling it. You can do a search. Also, if you are replacing your radiator, you might think about the HD version for towing etc. I think it is a two row. There are other versions out there. I have the DPG 3 row on mine. Some think the 2-row Modine is as good or better. There are other products that might offer better cooling, but more $$.
