Rough idle/stumping with gas and poor acceleration

Recommended Posts

Hey gang

So i think i have learned to leave well enough alone -  to date i had replaced my fuel injectors and all new plus/caps/dist etc etc and the truck (87 2wd) was running well - idle wasn't the greatest, but since i hadn't owned the thing long maybe that the way it just was suppose to be. Well disaster has struck (well not that much disaster). i decided to replace all the shocks and for the driver side i took out the airbox etc etc to get to the shock nut. When i got the thing back together i took it for a quick drive and was thinking man these bilensteins sure changed the ride to sweetness, but did notice a tiny bit of hesitation when accelerating from a stop for just the mili-second when i first hit the pedal, but it ran smoothly afterwards and if i just hit the pedal a bit more aggressive it powered though it. Today when i was going out i noticed the stumble again (starts just fine), and it ran much worse (noticeable missing/roughness in running) and really won't go past 65 on the freeway - $#!&.

Ok, so i replaced all the plugs (i had the champion iridium in) with champion coppers -  no change. i cleaned the battery terminals and the braided cable contact points  - i wanted to check the block ground by the dip stick, but the stud is unwinding rather than the nut so i have to come up with plan b for that (snip wires and reconnect w/ new hardware to try and figure  what kind of POS end is on that stud  to try and hold it while losing the nut, regardless i sprayed penetrating oil on it for another day).  I also looked at all the vacuum hoses and can see no obvious ones off or cracked, but just to be careful i ordered a new set from Napa. I also cleaned the junction box thing that was full of the black tar crap  -  all this stuff and still the same piss poor running afterwards. Anyways i ordered the upgraded wiring for ground etc from Jon Kelley, and while waiting for them and the vacuum harness ( 3-4 days i'm guessing - which means next weekend) wanted to get a few opinions of problems/fixes i may want to consider  -

any and all input appreciated of course!

thanks

mike

Possible bad CPS?

Possible clogged catalytic converter?

Sure could be.

But with a loose dipstick grounding stud, all bets are off until that's addressed.

The Renix era XJs and MJs were built with an under-engineered grounding system for the engine/transmission electronics. One problem in particular involves the multiple ground connection at the engine dipstick tube stud. A poor ground here can cause a multitude of driveabililty issues, wasted time, failed emission tests, and wasted money replacing components unnecessarily.

The components grounding at the dipstick tube stud are:

Distributor Sync Sensor, TCU main ground, TCU “Shift Point Logic”, Ignition control Module, Injectors, ECU main ground which other engine sensors ground through, Oxygen sensor, Knock Sensor, Cruise Control, and Transmission Sync signal.  All extremely important stuff.

Yup the stud was in there very tight, but the nut won't come off rather the whole stud wants to unwind so of course it will break the wires on it - anyone know the actual part number of the stud so i can order a new one, then i can cut the wires and put new ends on them and apply a new stud etc etc

thx!

it probably did at some point in the past, now there is just a mess on the end and my torx sockets won't fit, thus the reason for sourcing a new one and necessitating sniping the ring ends off the wires and redoing it

thx!

You can hold the stud. It's got a reverse Torx on the end of it!!

thx Cruiser -  did just that, just waiting for some shiney  new eyehole electrical connectors things as didn't want to use the crappy ones from autoparts store

Snip the wires then. Install new eyelets and ground everything somewhere else then. You'll be fine. Remember though where you ground it. clean and shiny like a baby's hiney.

Cruiser 54  and Eagle

The truck is back and running beautifully - don't know if it was the vacuum lines or replacing all the battery cables/ground/block wiring  but she runs most excellent - thank you both as i was starting to sweat it out - even ordered an replacement CPS which will go into the part for later box!!

thanks!
