jimoshel
yesterday the fan belt in my '87 2.5 gave up. Today while trying to replace it from my used stock instead of buying a new one I discovered the power steering pump pulley is off set to the rear about 1/4 of an inch. With the narrow belt it seemed to work OK. The belt rode in the forward position on the PS pump and in the rear position on the rest of the pulleys. But with the wider belt it wouldn't work. Checking a couple other 2.5's Showed they all had the wide belt and the PS pulley was 1/4 inch farther out. Question is, was the narrow belt a common Jeep thing, Or did some backyard mechanic just put it together?
Jeep Driver
All 2.5 belts are 6 groove......>IIRC
Jeep Driver
BTW, that pulley on the 2.5 is specific to the 2.5, someone may have put a 4.0 pulley or a later year pulley on it.....as for the reason it's off.
jimoshel
Wondering if the alternator isn't off a 4.0. Going to do some checking,,,tomorrow. Meantime just going to swap pumps and get the correct belt.
