97 swap, without the 97 swap questions...

Recommended Posts

As some of yall know from before, I have an 86 2wd 4speed. I had issues keeping it running and its not really what i want as a truck anyway. So I bought a 98 xj trail rig that had been rolled. I want to swap in the motor and drive train, but I am not interested in swapping in the new interior... I like my bench seat and old style interior. putting the drive train in is not an issue but can i make one harness or the other work with my factory dash? if the newer dash is needed to make everything work I guess thats what i'll do. The xj currently has an auto, but i'm not interested in keeping that. I'll find an AX15 eventually so will any other modifications needed to wiring for that? and lastly, does anyone want my oldmotor and tranny? LOL thanks guys.

I think the easiest thing to do would be to grab the engine and dash harnesses from a '96. I am currently in the middle of putting a 2000 4.0l/aw4/231 into my '86. The '96 harness and dash drop right in. There was only one bracket on the pax fender that I had to remove. I am also using the '96 steering column and brake pedal as well. You could just swap out your dash harness vs. the entire dash, but you will need a cluster that will work with the obd2 computer. Also putting in the aw4 and then swapping it out for a manual will probably be more work than it is worth. I would put the ax15 in from the start.

96+ are your only real options for that drivetrain. 96 is the only way you're going to get the old style interior because it was the only pre-97 year to use OBDII. Like richasco said, the dash from a 96 will bolt directly in more or less and work with a 97 drivetrain while keeping the older style looks. On the other hand you're going to have to mod the firewall quite a bit to get the 4.0 in anyway so you might as well swap the interior while you're at it.
