Termite Control - 1986 2.8L V6 Black Interior Jeep Comanche

Recommended Posts

Hi. I just recently made an account and bought a comanche, but I've been browsing and getting ideas for a few months. Still not sure what I want to do with it, but I'll try to keep you fellas updated as it goes. Anyways, here it is. Hopefully the pictures work, haha.

$#!&ty pic, but I was pretty surprised to find out the clock works!

Here's a bike that got thrown in for $50. Not currently running but I don't have a ton of experience with motorcycles so it ought to be fun :P

233,000 miles. AX5 tranny, 2.8l V6, black interior, manual windows/locks, dirty as hell and needs a lot of work.

Hi, I'm looking to see what you all think would be the best thing to do. I really like the black interior and I know it's kinda something special. However, the dash is cracked and going to need replaced and both seats are going to need some reupholstery work if I want to save it. Originally, I was going to do the full 97+ swap, but this was before I knew it had a black interior. Is it something worth saving? How hard would a new dash be to find?

Also, I haven't heard good things about the 2.8. Eventually, I'd like to swap it out for something bigger/better. I'm on a pretty tight high school budget so this might be a while but I'm bored so just planning things out. Lol. The 350 sounds cool, but it also sounds like a pita for something that is going to be a DD and rarely see more trails than muddy KS roads. I've heard good things about the 3.4 swap because it's easy, but I was wondering how that would compare to something like the 4.3 V6, or maybe a 4.0 or a 4.6 stroker or something along those lines.

Well I would either get a different dash and dye it or put a black dash mat over it and call it good.. but that's me... 97 swap is a huge undertaking but can be done well.. I have a Crack in my dash on my 89 and have a dash mat over it... yes black is sweet! Oh and yes the engine is the worst in my opinion but I would stick with a jeep engine personally bc it's a jeep! If not I would do a vortec swap bc those are great engines also! Good luck!

Hey welcome and nice find! This should be fun to watch.
Verify your transmission- I've got an '86 4-speed and a '88 5-speed-- I think that 4 speeds got the AX-4, but 5-speeds got the ba10/5 until '89 when they started getting AX-5's.
Can any of the great minds of CC confirm that for me?

It's super important because they take totally different lubricants. Also one you can thrash and one you have to baby.

I don't know a lot about identifying these things.. but from what I can tell it's an AX5. It's a manual 5 speed. I haven't ever heard of the ba10/5, so that's probably what it is. Which can you thrash and do you need to baby?

Lotsa things, it depends on what you're willing to spend.

Currie HD steering setup: http://www.currieenterprises.com/cestore/Product.aspx?id=1219

You can install WJ knuckles to get a larger rotor and caliper:  http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/wj-knuckle-swap-parts-list-1216365/

You can install a much stronger brake booster + MC: http://comancheclub.com/topic/24430-wj-booster-and-master-cylinder-upgrade/

You could swap in disc brakes in the rear, either through a Junkyard set or with Teraflex: http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/tmi-4354425/overview/

You could also swap steering boxes with a durango for a quicker turning ratio.

The possibilities are almost endless
