Front Axle Might Be Engaging And Disengaging

Recommended Posts

Ok, I did a search and did not find this issue listed, but I am sure there is some discussion somewhere.

Anyway, while driving in the snow last week and today, I placed the vehicle in 4H. Sporadically, the truck will make a loud knock/pop noises and the truck jerks. It feels like it is coming from the front axle. At least to me, it feels like the "front axle might be engaging and disengaging" while driving. If I let off the gas immediately the noise & jerks stop. As I continue to drive the vehicle will sporadically exhibit the same symptoms.

I stopped and shifted in & out of 4H several times to discount the issue of not having the shifter in the correct position.

I know the vacuum lines and vacuum engager should be checked, but what should I look for or test to verify it's proper operation?

So, starting with the least aggressive method to resolve the problem, what should I look for.

thanks

I used to have the same exact issue - mine was the vacuum axel disconnect acting up.  I ended making a home made axel disconnect with a bicycle cable and some other parts, you can permanently lock your front axel by stacking washers and keeping the fork engaged at all times, this is a cheap fix.  I ended up swapping a non CAD axel and the problem was solved

instead of washers, you take the CAD off and look into were the fork sits, on each side there is a c-clip that holds the frok in place on the rod. move the fork into the 2wd position, take the c-clip off the oppsosite side and slide the fork back into 4wd position while making sure the rod stays in place (2wd Pos.). then put the c-clip back in its orginal spot and there your done, put the cad back making sure the fork is correctly holding the collar and when u go to bolt it back on rotate the front driveshaft back and forth until u feel the collar slide over, and once u bolted it in the front axle is engaged.  and make sure u unplug the vacc. lines running to the CAD and plug em
