54bobby Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 guys, I have a leak coming from the t housing so i'm getting a new one from rock auto. what t-stat should I get. the truck is an 87 2.5 w/ 170,000 on the clock. they have 3 temp ranges. 160, 180, and they say oem 195.
AeroNautical Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Operating temp for the 4.0 is 210, and I believe it's the same for the 2.5. 195 is the one you want, much lower than that and your engine won't get up to a healthy operating temp. When you buy a new one, it should have a small brass plug at the top of the thermostat that rattles around. Make sure that remains at the top when installing it, it allows the closed system to "burp" itself, or so I've been told.
