Ba10/5 Speedometer Noise

Recommended Posts

I have an '88 comanche with the ba10/5 trans. When the outside temp. is approx. 40 deg. or lower, the speedometer reads way faster than the actual road speed when going approx.10 mph or faster, and there is a whining noise that seems to be coming from the speedo cable and/or the speedo output gear in the trans. When slowing down below 10 mph,the noise stops, and the speedo reads correctly.I have filled the trans. with the correct grade & weight of gear oil. When it is warm outside, it works great.Has anyone else experienced this?Any ideas on what causes this and/or how to correct it would be greatly appriciated! Thanks.

I'd say the speedo cable needs to be lubricated.

X2

I had the same noise (my MJ had sat for 10 years) I used an white lithium grease that came in an aerosol can with a straw ( I think from the factory it is a graphite based lube)......undid the cable..... shot as much as i could in.....put it back on and drove for a couple of days and repeated the process.

I did it from the bottom....i would expect that if you took the time to pull the dash and get at the speedo from the top gravity would help you pull in even more lubricant and speed up the process.
