Scottracer
Hello, If don't care about background then skip down. So I am in the final stages of putting everything back together on my 87 Comanche after replacing the glorious slave cylinder. Yeah!! So a quick background. Had my MJ for almost a year and a half now. Had been looking for a few years here locally on the Vegas area. Wanted something in fairly good shape since my skills for repair have not had a chance to blossom. Another big reason for an older truck was to learn and build and create. Have been wanting to learn for sometime and having an old Jeep would be great way to learn. Always loved the simple idea of a small kick @$$ truck and the Comanche was without a doubt my favorite. Fast forward a year later and the clutch went out. Ok. First real fix and or repair. What?? I have to drop the transmission to get to it? Hmm... Well this is what I wanted. Maybe not for a first project but it is what it is. After much reading (posts, articles, anything basically I could hands on) I started pulling things apart. Little by little it came undone and then the famous top clutch housing bolt issue. And then I striped it. Not good in case anyone was wondering. After much struggle I got in touch with fellow comancheclub gent mountainman who came over to help with the other side and give some pointers as to how to get it out. Much thanks to mountainman for sure. Went the grind it out method. Finally got it out. whewwww..... Been one hell of a learning experience. Was definitely above my pay grade. But little by little. Started putting things back together. Few challenges here and there. Hopefully all part of the learning curve. Got it together and even got it started. YEAH!!!!! Didn't drive since I wanted to go over everything one more time and finish a few things up. Just needed to hear her run. Well, I seem to have small leak from bleeding valve of clutch. Not the nipple end but the back end compression fitting side. Tightened it and will check it again for leaks in morning. Was tight already so I hope that works. Now for the puzzle pieces. The following pic some the left over bolts. Oops. I labeled the bolts to make it easy. #1 were actually the bottom clutch housing bolts. Pretty sure they weren't original. Replaced them.. #2 ????? #3 I figured this out tonight. It is the second bolt that holds the plate where the slave cylinder exits the housing. This brings me to todays troubles. The grommet that goes in that plate was missing when I went to put bolt in. It was there when I put back together. I pulled other bolt and it was inside. Trying to get it out only made it worse. It is now somewhere inside the housing. %#$*@&^^# and few other things. Question. How important is it? It is soft rubber and should have no affect on flywheel. Or will it?? Can I leave it, or do I need to get it out. I really don't want to go through pulling transmission loose. I did try to unbolt bottom of housing and use a hanger but no luck. I am not really sure what to do at this point. #4 Don't know. There was a third but I do know it was used in bottom of clutch housing. I will say I learned that next time I will do a better job of marking, labeling, photographing and documenting my work. I was definitely in over my head put kept treading and grabbing gulps of air and now I can see the end, until tonights fiasco. Really thought I was going for drive tonight. One other item of confusion. The vent tubes from the transmission have a clip on them to bolt somewhere, and (back to my lack of documenting) I have no idea where they were. I do know they werent attached to anything despite having and end that looks like it should connect to something. See bottom pic. Can i just tie them up somewhere out of the way?? Many thanks in advance. I have learned a lot from you guys and look forward to doing more with some of the great ideas you have given me with a lot of your projects. First is to get her running again. And yes, an AX-15 is on the list of things to do. And yes with external slave. http://www.flickr.com/photos/95926972@N03/
64 Cheyenne
2. front of the bellhousing - holds the inspection cover on. 3. bottom left bellhousing where you replaced one of the bolts, supports the tailpipe. 4. I think you are right. last, the vent attaches through a bolt upper right side of bellhousing.

Will have to check for other holes I may have missed. #3 did not have a nut with it and it ended up being exactly the same as the other bolt holding little inspection type plate where clutch lines enter and exit bell housing. Nut sure what clip is for. Do not believe it was being used for anything prior. Many oddities I have found with this truck. Last owner or two definitely had some imagination when it came to fixing things. There was a different clip for the exhaust that attached to the lower left bell housing. Scottracer
Ok, I figured out where everything goes and was able to drive her around the neighborhood last night. Took her to work this morning. 5 miles. Flawless. Clutch a little lighter than previous but all working fine. Driving home go over speed bump into housing complex and it dies and won't restart. Turns over fine but not firing. Almost like it is out of gas but it has a 1/4 tank. Oil pressure light was on but it has oil and all. Just don't know. Anything specific to check and how to check it would be greatly appreciated. Learning fast and hard with her.
64 Cheyenne
Can you hear the fuel pump run when you turn the key to "on" but not to start? If "no' try jumping the fuel pump ballast resistor "ceramic looking rectangular thing" with two wires by air filter box on the left fenderwell. Do a search for a pic. Does it have "spark"...
