Frankensteinsmj
OK here goes, the electric stock fan is not coming on at 190 deg as it is supposed to. I did a search and found most just throw in a switch at the dash but I'm trying to get it to work off the radiator thermo-switch. It won't come on with the a/c on either because of a low freon charge. This is what i've done. I took the rad switch out and tested it for continuity in a pot of water on the stove and it works at around 190 deg. I took a jumper wire and jumped the connector that plugs into the rad switch and the fan runs so that tells me that the fan, the relay and everything else is working except the switch! I even went thru the closed rad cooling system bleeding thinking there was air in the rad but that didn't work either. Soooo, My temp gauge was up to 230 deg (it runs cool but I blocked the rad so it would run hot) so it should of come on, at least you would think or ????? Any ideas anyone? I got the truck painted so I've got to get another pic on here. Just put a new fuel tank in and replaced the rear drive shaft u joints with HD off road ones too! JeepcoMJ
first, it should run at 210 degrees. second, I thought that they run based on the computer? I'm used to working with gm computers in camaros though...
Frankensteinsmj
jeepco, first the chiltons book states 190 deg and that is about what I found in my kitchen experiment lab. Second. no it runs off the rad thermo-switch and the A/C switch.
JeepcoMJ
hmm sorry if I seemed agressive. but I bet that switch is bad. As I said my experience with fans is in the GM department, and that's computer controlled. and my bro's 4.0 (88 pioneer) kicks in @ 210. maybe something is changed on his or they varied by year
Frankensteinsmj
yeah, 210 might be because of the temp gauge unit is on a hot spot of the block. BTW, how's your dad's turbo diesel run? not to get off the topic
JeepcoMJ
well, despite the cracked head in one of the precups, it runs great. hopefully we'll have another TD addition to the family soon, we just need to finalize the details. we have a brand new 0 mile motor for the TD and we're looking for a new bed, so that we can restore it and slightly modify it. But it's a hell of alot better than the 2.5 or even the 2.8. I love it!

Eagle
the blue one is my dad's turbo diesel'86 Renault 2.1 TD, stock everything, dana 44 rear end with 4.10's. Not stock everything, 'cause it's wearing '93 Grand Cherokee alloy rims and the Dana 44 axle wasn't used in 1986. For '86 the optional heavy-duty axle was the AMC Model 20. JeepcoMJ
those rims were on only in the pics, it's got the 8" wide stocker steels on it again. and YES, it is the STOCK 1986 dana 44. it isn't an AMC 20, trust me on that one, and we got it from the original owner who had never done anything to the truck except regular oil changes until he blew the timing belt at 100K miles. it IS a dana 44. ...sorry to contradict, but that's what it is, and i'm not lying. the renault is an odd-enough option as-is, and dana 44 was an option for those :D

Oizarod115
are you 100% sure your dash gauge isnt off? maybe its reading high if the switch kicked in at 190 in water then it should kick in at 190 in coolant/water. 190 is 190. unless the ground/power wires to the fan itself are bad and its not getting any power regardless... have you tried wiring it direct to see if it even works? Eagle
those rims were on only in the pics, it's got the 8" wide stocker steels on it again. There were no 8" steelies available. The base level steelies, the ones with 9 rectangular slots out near the rim, were 15x6, and the 8-spoke "wagon wheels" were 15x7.
JeepcoMJ
I'd say wanna bet...but i'm broke. these rims are 8" wide jeep rims. the rear end is a stock factory dana 44, and it's an 86.
