Speedo Cable

I've seen alot of posts in the classifieds and so on asking for speedo cables. I hear they are hard to find intact, and to grab one, even if you don't need it, for replacement later on down the road. So, I found this: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=1261625&cc=1181584

Rock Auto sells them for 20 bucks. Searched under 88 Jeep Comanche. Do people not know about this or is it mislabeled? I guess 20 bucks is a bit much, but it sure as hell beats scavenging through JYs to find one in OK shape.

I don't think $20 is unreasonable for a part that they stopped using 23 years ago.

 

Unfortunately there were also many different lengths, so that's another reason it can be hard to get ahold of one.

I see, didn't think about that. I come across alot of them at pull a parts, I suppose I should start taking them.

If you're trying to pull one at a yard, while you're under the truck dis-connecting the cable at the transmission remove the cable retainer on the engine side of the firewall and pop the grommet out of its hole. This will give you more slack to pull the gauge cluster out of the dash far enough to get your hand behind it and remove the plastic clip on the cluster end of the cable. Don't gorilla it as that will break the plastic fitting (it may break anyway, but you'll have a better chance this way).

The Dorman part number that is specific to many MJ speedo cables is no longer available, per the Dorman site, although the photo on your link looks like it has the plastic clip at the speedo end. If that's correct, $20 is a good price.

I've heard that there is a year model break that used a different speedo end style and that a 4WD cable will work on a 2WD truck. Some of the MJ gurus can chime in and clarify or correct me if I'm mistaken.

i think you're all nuts.

 

my 2wd conversion mj's used their original cables for awhile until i added cruise, and the cruise cables didn't necessarily come from one with the same engine option.

 

never had an issue with mix and matching them. the only thing i ever had to worry about was making sure that the upper clip is the same style for whichever speedometer i had.
