JeepcoMJ
got a 1995 2 door xj with an aw4 trans that went bad...torque converter was shot too. got a aw4 tranny and tc from the jy for 200 bucks (know the owner well) but it was frozen to the ground. had to cut the wiring connector ends because they were frozen into the ice. mechanically it is fine. i swapped over the wiring from the old tranny after i pulled it, except for one sensor...the one that's exactly opposite the shift selector. i couldn't figure out how to take it off without breaking it (broke the one on the junk tranny) so i just cut the wires off the old tranny, and spliced them onto the wires for the new tranny. they all matched up. NOW i am done with the mechanical part...or so i thought. it won't start, and the backup lights don't come on when switched into reverse. by won't start i mean it doesn't even crank. could that sensor i didn't swap out be bad? what could cause it? i already checked the starter relay and the juice coming to it and the starter. the fact that the backup lights make me think that i have a bad connection somewhere or that that sensor is bad. i used butt connectors for the wiring, and shrink tubed them in. can anyone shed some light on what it may be? comancheon33
Sounds like you have a bad neutral safety switch to me.
JeepcoMJ
backup lights don't work either though. aaaand where is the neutral safety switch?
comancheon33
It is on the side of the tranny. To call it a NSS is really a lie. It is actually a range selector switch. It controls park and neutral starting, back up lights and tells the ecm what gear your have selected. Check out alldata it will break it all down for ya. I have been there before, guys on NAXJA have torn them apart and cleaned them before. I would try that because there are two different styles and one of them is pretty pricey. JeepcoMJ
alright, so how do i get it off? on the old one, i took off the 13mm bolt, and the nut that's on the shift selector shaft. then i pried on it a little bit and it brokethe plastic back right off. is there some way to remove it without breaking it or taking the whole damned tranny apart? i really don't want to drop the pan because it's got a new gasket and is already full of trans fluid. help? JeepcoMJ
yea...umm...the nut ripped the threads up and now i can't figure out how to get it off? :???: :hmm: and i'm NOT paying the $230 bumper to bumper wants for them. i just need to get this one off...in 1 piece. i know i can make a good one, but idk how to get it off now? i may just bypass the system for now and then fix it later. idk if that's a good idea tho... carnuck
Look for a C clip on the shaft behind where the nut was. Some have them and some don't.
JeepcoMJ
no c clip. i seem to have solved the problem...i figured friction in the switch may clean the contacts. so i disconnected the battery, turned the key to on, and shifted the heck outta it...moving the cross-shaft and thus rubbing all the contacts in the switch together. it worked. now it only sometimes has a no-start issue in park, and it ALWAYS starts in neutral. no backup lights though. so yes i do need to put a new switch on, i KNOW i can't get this one off without wrecking it. so off to the junkyard...cause i don't have $230. but it's sold for $2500 tomorrow. my friend Ryan is buying it...paying cash. then i'm undercoating it for him and putting the orig. blackout rims back on it cause we want the ones on it now. picks it up saturday and after that point...it's not my problem. :D so thanks for your help everyone!
