dhisso
Hello everyone, I have a question. I have an 87 Comanche 2wd ax4 2.5l. runs great just needs 4wd! I have another Comanche I'm able to get at a pretty good price, but it has a 6cyl 4x4 and it smokes alot. my question is will the transmission and transfer case bolt up to my jeeps Engine? Mountain Dude
It depends...what transmission is in the other Comanche?
Geonovast
One has a 2.5, the other has a 4.0. The transmissions will not directly swap.
dhisso
The other trans is a ax-5 if I'm not mistaken. It's an 88 or 89 model. So they will not swap. Okay that's all I needed to know then! Thanks!
mnkyboy
It would have a ba10/5 or an ax15 behind a 4.0l. The 2.5l had the ax4 and ax5.
Geonovast
Yup, the AX-5 is an AX-4 but with a 5th gear. 4.0 has the AX-15. You can get an AX-4/5 from any 2.5 XJ/MJ/YJ/TJ or a 2.8 XJ/MJ.
Mountain Dude
Can you not just swap the transmission behind the bell housing, keeping the one from the 4 cyl?
Geonovast
No. That works with the AW-4. AX-5 and AX-15 are completely different in that regard. An AX-15 can be mounted behind a 2.5 with a certain year range Dakota 2.5/5 speed bellhousing, but they're insanely hard to find.
Mountain Dude
So, the front mounting flange of the transmission is different between the AX5 and the AX15?
Geonovast
Yes.
