Comanche_Fanatic Posted February 21, 2013 Share Posted February 21, 2013 Ive got a '86 MJ XLS 4x4 and the chevy motor and auto trans in it is a POS, I need to change out both of them and put in a reliable Inline motor (2.5L, 4.0L, or 4.2L ) along with a 5spd manual trans and the clutch system as well. It has to be 4x4 compatiable cause I don't have the long driveshaft. If you have what I'm looking for let me know ASAP, thanks. P.S. I'm in the Middle Georgia area. If you a do a 4.0L swap, you're going to have to make some modifications to the front frame support and radiator mounts to make room for the larger engine. It's a swap I'm looking to eventually do if my 2.5L craps out. That, or a Cummins 4bt hahaha. But seriously, AMC changed the engine bay a little to house the I6. If you're okay with swapping a 2.5L, your current radiator will work find and you can use an AX4 or 5 transmission. I'm more concerned with the exhaust system really, cause its going to be different from stock. I hope i get a 4.0, but a 2.5 works fine, theyre strong motors still. 1989MJ Posted February 24, 2013 Share Posted February 24, 2013 I've got a 86 model Comanche 2.5 5-speed 4x4 motor complete minus power steering pump and bracket runs but has water in oil still in truck. 5-speed also needs some work 1st and 2nd are out. I will sell you whole truck with title for $800 missing tailgate, taillights, wheels/tires, steering column, and bench seat.
