Probably A Dumb Question

Recommended Posts

I had the truck out on the river yesterday and dipped the front end into a deeper than realized hole.

I drove around the trails for about an hour after that and then drove the 45 minute drive home. As I pulled into my street, it would hesitate to accelerate.

Then my radio would cut out, and my speakers sound blown. I pulled in the driveway, shut it off, and it was dead, acted like the battery was drained. So I jumped it, and it started fine. Drove Dow the street, no problems. Got home, shut it off, won't start. My battery is an optima red top, so i was surprised that it might be bad. So i jumped it again, let it run, removed the negative cable from the battery, and it dies. So It's my Alternator, right?

If so, why would it still idle and run down the road?

How far were you driving? It really doesn't take much juice to keep an engine going.

Last July, I drove 30 miles through a storm, with my headlights and wipers on, after losing an alternator belt. After the thing I barely made it to on time (left late), I swapped the belt and the van I was driving turned over like the battery was fully charged. Best part was the storm had blown over by then, so I didn't even get drenched.

The alternator itself may not be your issue... could be something else that got wet, preventing it from charging. It might (but not likely) get better if you let it dry out for a couple days.
