derjeager Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 will the transfere case off my 86 standard trans bolt up to a 87 auto out of a wagoneer mid size :brows:
carnuck Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Are we talking 4 or 6 cyl? All 4 cyl AX-5 std and '87 to '89 6 cyl std (with 3 bolt shifter BA 10/5 5 speeds) have 21 spline outputs. AX-15 (4 bolt shifter used '90 and newer) is 23 spline output. AW4 automatic used on '87 to 08/90 XJ/MJs are 21 spline (4 and 6 cyl). 3 speed auto used on 4 cyls '84 to '90 are 23 spline output (and shallow output) I put a NP208J (you can also use a NP219, NP228 or NP229) from a full size Jeep onto an AX-15 (it'll also fit 09/90 and newer AW4s with 23 spline) BUT I had to install a Dana 300 adapter ring (because the FSJ tcases are shallow input) I now have a stronger than NP231 tcase for cheap (I see them for @$150) that already has a fixed yoke output. (I was upgrading to an AX-15 at the time) Only reason I didn't install it yet is because the AX-15 probably needs a new input bearing to ensure longevity.
derjeager Posted March 20, 2007 Author Posted March 20, 2007 It was a 2.8 gm i am putting an 4.0 and an auto in
87manche Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 not likely, get the t-case that was with the donor 4.0/trans combo. don't forget the linkages.
carnuck Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 You could have a NP231 or NP207 tcase with the 2.8L and std trans. It should be a 21 spline (count the teeth to be sure. A few rare T5 23 splines were used '84 to '86 when AX trans weren't available due to slowed shipping from Japan) Here's a thought for some of you guys. A Jeep 4.0L with 9xx automatic (you'd need a flexplate from a YJ with EFI and 3 speed auto to get the correct flexplate) then make a CPS hole in the bellhousing (or find a non-computerized version 999 with the stock hole) and put it into an earlier rig with EFI (or just a 4.2/4.0L with a carb setup and 4x4 904 trans) It will bolt up to the tcase in a 4 cyl 3 speed auto rig (hey! You could even do a 727 and AMC V8!) Just don't bolt them to a NP207 or it'll probably scatter first time you shift it into gear! LOL!

Beware...Chuck and I found out the hard way when we converted his 2.5 YJ from auto (TF904) to manual (AX5), that the 904/909's are 23 spline output, not 21. If you start using YJ stuff, not everything behind the 2.5L is 21 spline. Jeff
carnuck Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 I meant to say "you 4 cyl or V6 auto guys". Sorry about that! The brain moved faster than the typing fingers!
