tail lights / brake lights

Recommended Posts

I went to lunch with a buddy to day and on the way home he noticed my brake lights were not working... any way.

My brake lights do work sorta. When I step on the brake pedal the brake lights do not turn on, but when I turn my head lights / tail lights on, my tail lights and brake lights turn on and stay on. Any idea where I should look for the crossed wire/s?

Thanks,

Kendrick

I would try the simple thing first...change the bulbs. I have seen in the dual element bulbs that one element will break and fall against the other and cause the issue you are describing. It would be a bit strange and unlikey for it to be both at the same time...BUT, you never know.

actually it would be 4 bulbs that would have to do that.

I'd check the grounds for the parking lights first, inclusing the front sockets.

Then I'd check the hazard flasher, since the brake circuit get's it's power from there, then go farther down the circuit.

There's a stop light switch connected to the back of the brake pedal and when it's depressed the switch completes the circuit lighting up the brake lights. I'm sure that's your problem. I had problems with NAPA stop light switches but good luck with ones from Federated Auto Parts. It's a very easy replacement, just make sure you remember the order/location of all the bits you remove.
