brubakes
What year Comanches have the AW4? Are there specific options that only were found with the AW4? Were they only behind the 4.0L?
Geonovast
AW-4 was used 87-92 in the MJ, and 87-01 in the XJ. They were used behind both the 2.5 and 4.0, although finding one behind a 2.5 is quite rare, since most later 2.5s came with the AX-5. AFAIK the only differences between the 2.5 and 4.0 AW-4s are the bellhousing(which is separable, unlike most automatics), the converter, and the TCU. I've heard there's internal differences, but haven't seen any proof of it either way.
brubakes
Thanks for the info. I believe there was a output spline difference between the early and late AW4s. I know the AW4 I swapped into my TJ was from a '97XJ and it has 23 spline output.
Geonovast
Yes there was, I believe the change from 21 to 23 was 1990.
carnuck
If it's 4.0L, then it's AW4. The 2.5 came with AW4 or 904 (early years). The changeover to 23 spline was 8th month of '90 when HOs came out. Much later ('97?) the 23 spline changed pitch and are a problem when dealing with older 23 spline cases.
