My first Jeep

Recommended Posts

This is my first time ever owning a Jeep/AMC and it was all pretty much by chance. I found it for sale when my toyota mr2 had developed rod knock after 270,000 hard miles, for only 600, and since I was on a budget I researched it. I found everything I've always wanted on a fuel efficient 4 cylinder that I thought only GM (I do not like the S10) could provide in a small truck. (TBI, single belt serpentine). I am mechanically inclined and my profession is a school bus mechanic for a local school district, since I've never owned a jeep I'll list my previously owned trucks.

1983 Dodge D100 318

1986 Chevrolet C10 350 (originally a 305, I get irritated when people call every small block a 350, most 86's were 305's)

1986 Toyota Pickup 22R/4 speed carbed (Previous owner promised title... never obtained it)

1989 B2200 2.2/5 speed Sorry to all you mazda guys but I hated this truck, 30 vacuum hoses and emissions crap.. I wanted to set it on fire when I had to work on it.

1986 Toyota Pickup 22r/4speed -ran great until the headgasket blew, was in the process of moving and gave it back (it was given to me when my friend was moving... I gave it back when I was moving.. he still hasn't worked on it and won't let me have it back... its been broken down 3 years now)

1985 Ford F150 302 carbed/aod

1987 Ford F150 300 straight 6/4speed (Fun truck but broke down constantly, ignition module, ecm ground wires, ecm, ignition module again, injector harness short, ignition coil, pick up coil, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump(s) high and low.. this truck made me lose faith in ford)

1997 F250 HD 351/E40D - ran perfect and besides a trans failure never gave me any problems- regained my trust in ford lol

The toyota's gave consistant 23-25mpg mostly highway. My straight 6 f150 would give 15mpg highway when it was running, the F250 could get 15mpg as well on highway but only at 60, 14mpg at 65, 13.5 at 70. In the city the F250 was a 11-12mpg, straight 6 was the same. Check out a 87-89 F150 straight 6, the injectors got so hot that you would get vapor lock on restarting so they built a fan with a tube to blow cool air on the injectors... its really ridiculous.

So far on my comanche I have fixed a few things.

When I first bought the truck it was at night and only the headlights worked... I noticed the radio harness was bare and cut so I figured they grounded out a illumination wire. I replaced the fuse and the parking lights came to life. Still the emergency/stop lights were not working. I fixed those (my friend followed me) at home. The connector to the brake light switch was corroded and I just cut it off and put a female connector on both wires plugged it back in and done. The license plate light was not functioning and my friend had a spare amber trailer light.. pulled the lens of and put a red solo cup (solo cup) over it to prevent "Visible light" to keep the local police happy. I removed the intake system (I am keeping it stored) and installed a k&n filter for the time being (summer time here in Texas).

Just looking to keep her on the road. I just did a fuel mileage check and 60%city 40% highway driving I managed 25.7mpg driving conservatively, I always also carrying 300lbs of misc junk to drop off at a local scrap metal yard for about 25 miles of the 75 mile test loop.

I can move my waterpump pully slightly when grabing the fan so I know thats going to kick the bucket soon, I want to replace all of my coolant hoses/thermostat/radiator at the same time though.

I found this radiator on amazon for $62 bucks

http://www.amazon.com/Shepherd-Parts-Co ... 663&sr=1-1

I will likely use rock auto for the rest of the parts.

I also found this compressor (a/c) http://www.amazon.com/Spectra-Premium-0 ... 777&sr=1-1
