Complete Newb Question

What tool do I need to remove this plug? It's on the side of my 5-speed transmission (89 comanche)

 

Can't fit my 3/8" rachet in there and 1/4" drive is too small..

Ah, the BA 10/5 transmission. That plug is an odd size. You are supposed to have to use a special tool to open it up. I just took an old crappy 3/8" or 1/2" (Can't remember which) extension and ground it down until it fit. Works great.

Found it! Unfortunately it cost 15 dollars to ship it from the great white north. I'm probably going to make my own..

Yep. That be the way to go. If you don't have a spare extension, just head to the local auto part store. They should have some couple buck chinese extensions just begging to become your specialty tool.

I found them at Northern Tool but you have to buy a coplete set. If you don't have an extention to sacrifice you can use an 8 point socket and a piece of key stock, I think the size is 5/16" but you will need to check that. Most all Craftsmen Tool sets came with those 8 point sockets and no one that I know ever had a use for them so you can usualy find someone with a set.

Harbor Freight sells a complete kit of drain plug adapters for this purpose. Bought one for my Pukey several months ago. You may have to order as not all stores stock this item.
