It's an '87 2WD 5speed 4 pounder with what is believed to be 132,000/82,000 original km's/miles. It a western vehicle in great shape, very clean, minimal runs etc.. Anyway, first thing I need to know is what's the biggest tire I can slap on without lifting it? I can get my hands on a set of Ford ranger 4X4 wheels with 235/75/15 LT tires. Would they fit? Second. The speedo has some issues. It reads too slow. Where should I start with this. It's a cable speedo I believe. I think thats it for now. I'll post some pics after i get it home. Oizarod115 Posted January 27, 2007 Share Posted January 27, 2007 don't know about that speedo but that sounds fishy... if it reads WAY slow it might have alot more miles than that on it. :nuts: ? right? but 235s definately fit stock. might rub a TINY bit on the control arm at full steering lock, but not bad. mine rub a tiny bit on the sway bar links at full lock to the left but that's the only time. so stick em on! Depending on what year they are orig off of...the back space on newer ford rims is 3.75 instead of thr 5.25 of a Jeep rim. So the tire will be pushed out from under the jeep more with the ford rims than with tyhe Jeep rims. this is good for larger, read wider tires as it keeps the rubber away from lca's. I drove what I know to be 2km and the odometer matched. Just the speed is off. I'll try lubing it up when I bring it home. Eagle Posted January 27, 2007 Share Posted January 27, 2007 As for tires, on stock Jeep rims you can run 235/75-15s with no problems. I run 30x9.50s on my '87 with just a tiny bit of rubbing of the tire on the lower control arms when the steering wheel is turned all the way to one side. On my '88 I have run 31x10.50s after I took out the lift. They fit just fine in the back but are a bit much in front. They do fit, but they rub the LCAs when turning and just look "too big" in the wheel opening. IMHO, I think the 30x9.50s are an excellent choice, or 235/75s. If you look at tire specs, there's not a lot of difference between a 235/75 and a 30x9.50. I would not recommend that Exploder rims. The stock Jeep rims allow even 31x10.50s to "stuff" inside the sheet metal when the suspension compresses. The reduced backspacing of the Ford rims means the tires WILL hit the flares and sheet metal. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

CW Yeah, but your truck is lifted. Not 100% sure, but I think the lift allows the "up" wheel to swing farther in because of the arc before it gets to where flares and sheet metal are in the path of travel. I don't have the 31s on any more but I really doubt that at stock height they would have cleared with the rims pushing them 1-1/2" farther outboard than stock rims. The reduced backspacing is a blessing in the rear, though. On the Jeep rims, a 31x10.50 sidewall rides frighteningly close to the leaf springs. There perfect, but I think I'm going to go with 235/75's on the MJ. 235's are a lot easier to find and more affordable. I had to search high and low to find 30x9.5's for my blazer that wouldn't break the bank. We don't have the same selection readily available in Canada. I do like the Mickey Thompson Baja tires though, and may go with them for the next set. I have also found a set of gold BBS type wheels from a Cherokee limited. I guess they would be the same size and spacing as what I have now. The price is right so I may go with them. I have black BBS mesh wheels with a polished lip on my blazer now, so they would match each other sitting in the driveway. The only downside is there a PITA to clean.
