Engine decision

Recommended Posts

I have thought of that already and I don't think I need the power I am happy with the 2.5 as far as thats concerned. I only want reliability again and to be able to drive further than 30 min from the house without a worry. Plus with 4.88s I should be pretty good for On road use.

If I ccould make the trip to pic it up I would consider it but what year is it and is all the wires and such that is needed for the swap there?? My neighbor is looking for a 4.0 from a 91-95 i think is the years. He might want it

He has one for his YJ and we are gutting it for ther swap so I should get it all.

Will my guages work or will I have tio change them??

Will my trans and t-case work with it???

Will my fuse panels work or do I need his???

I am so excited to get this nice of a motor for such a good deal and even if I need stuff he needs to keep in he will be getting an 91-95 XJ for his swap so I will steal the stuff of that if it will work. I don't care to go to the JY i actually love going our u-pull-it is HUGE.

Your gauges will work if you use the sending units for your year, not for the engine. Chrysler reversed the polarity on the gauges in 1991.

Try to treat it as a stand-alone engine conversion, and leave the vehicle parts of the harness stock. Remember, Chrysler sells (or did, they may have dropped it by now) a multi-port fuel injection conversion for the carburetted 4.2L Wranglers. That conversion was basically the MPI from a 95 injected Wrangler with the 4.0L engine. The 2.5L MPI is basically the same system. If it can be used as a stand-alone to convert a 6-cylinder, there's no reason you can't do the same thing with a 4-cylinder. He's only going to give you the engine harness anyway, because he'll need the chassis harness with his engine swap, so you should be getting what you need, and not a lot more.

So you saying (I am a little slow this late at night) that I don't need to mess with the fuse panels and such I just need to use the computer(s) if theres more than one and the MOTORs wireing harness and then everything will plug and play. I hope this is what your saying cause that makes it easier. If the fuses will work I don't have to mess with the rest of the interior controls corect?? Just the motor and comp. and such.

Thanks for the info Eagle.

Cole, I haven't done it, but a friend of mine down the road installed one of the Mopar MPFI conversions into an early 4.2L (carburetted) Wrangler. I helped him a little. He didn't replace the vehicle fuse panel or instrument cluster. He just had to splice into the vehicle chassis harness in a couple of places to get power for the engine controls.

I don't see why it would be any different for a 2.5L. Once you start messuing with the vehicle harness and fuse box, you're going to have to rewire the entire truck. And an XJ harness is NOT the answer ... there are differences between the XJ and the MJ, particularly with respect to stop & tail lights and hazard flashers.

You'll need a wiring diagram for your truck, and for the year XJ the new engine comes out of, but with those two diagrams you should be able to figure out where you need to connect the engine controls into the chassis harness. I wouldn't go beyond that.

Well the motor and such is acctually coming from a 91 YJ but if what your saying is true all that needs touched will be the motor harness and computer and such. Thanks for the reply I know you have been busy.
