(MJ)
I know you guys have said to look for your question before you ask and i have but i have only found bits of answers. My dilema is my Peugeot BA10/5 is fried, my reverse kicks its self out and second gear won't go in unless it has been warmed up. I'm looking to put an Aisin AX-15 and i have read that 94 plus years are the better ones to get because of the external slave cylinder but that an 87-91 would be easier. Why would it be easier and what makes it so? and if i go with the 94 and up what will i have to do to make everything fit in and work?
Geonovast
The 89-91 isn't necessarily easier if you're changing the pilot bushing anyway. The 89-91 AX-15s have the same size input shaft tip for the pilot bushing as the BA 10/5 does. To put a 92+ AX-15 in, you need a pilot bushing for a 74 CJ with a 304. Not a big deal. You will need an AX-15 trans crossmember though. Edit: t'was an idiot.
terrawombat
I have heard that you still need to bore out the inner diameter of the CJ bushing to get it to fit properly on the 92+ AX-15's. Can you confirm this?
Geonovast
If you get the 79 CJ bushing you need to bore it out. The 79 information was going around for awhile, but the 74 bushing has the correct OD and ID. (From Rockauto) 79 Bushing NATIONAL Part # PB76HD More Information About this Part Bushing; Bore=0.673", Outer Diameter=1.0555", Width=0.63" 74 Bushing NATIONAL Part # PB77HD Bushing; Bore=0.751", Outer Diameter=1.056", Width=0.88" H/D

Eagle
The 87-91 AX-15s have the same size input shaft tip for the pilot bushing as the BA 10/5 does. There are no 87-89-1/2 AX-15s. The BA 10/5 was the 5-speed tranny behind the 4.0L from 1987 through the first half of 1989. The AX-15 was a mid-year production change in the 1989 model run. If you notice, the sentence right before that, I said 89-91.
