My gas gauge worked fine until yesterday when it moved up all the way way past full. think its a bad ground or what? where is the ground for the fuel gauge?

Not likely. If the ground was open the needle wouldn't move at all. For the needle to peg there must be a short to ground between the gauge and ground or faulty sending unit.

Sounds like bad sending unit to me. Remove the wire at the tank and see what it does. If the needle stays on zero then the sending unit is bad. If you have a variable resistor or another sending unit put it in series with the wire you removed from the tank and ground. The needle should move as you vary the resistance.
