artimus Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 My gas gauge worked fine until yesterday when it moved up all the way way past full. think its a bad ground or what? where is the ground for the fuel gauge?
jimoshel Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Fuel pump and gas gauge shares a common ground. Behind left tail light.
artimus Posted January 14, 2011 Author Posted January 14, 2011 so do you not think its the ground if its shared with the fuel pump?
jimoshel Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Not likely. If the ground was open the needle wouldn't move at all. For the needle to peg there must be a short to ground between the gauge and ground or faulty sending unit.
artimus Posted January 14, 2011 Author Posted January 14, 2011 the needle just sits there pointing 90 degrees to the right
jimoshel Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Sounds like bad sending unit to me. Remove the wire at the tank and see what it does. If the needle stays on zero then the sending unit is bad. If you have a variable resistor or another sending unit put it in series with the wire you removed from the tank and ground. The needle should move as you vary the resistance.
