Keats
I've got an 89' Comanche that runs like crap right now.....It will idle ok, with periodic increases or decreases. When I first start it, it will run/drive alright sometimes, but after a while it runs terrible. I can have it in 1st and put the pedal down and it puts at about 2 mph for roughly 15 seconds, then seems to take off.I can rev it up to about 3,000 rpms, dump the clutch and it will accelerate almost like a normal car would....almost....My question is, could this be a faulty head gasket? I was thinking it could hold enough pressure to idle, but put it under a load, and when compression counts it's got nothing. Sound reasonable??, or am I way off?? Any imput would be greatly appreciated....this thing is starting to really piss me off. Also its not the TPS, spark plugs/wires, or fuel pump. 87manche
do a compression check on the cylinders and it will tell you more about it's top end health than anything else. If the compression check is good then it's in fine mechanical shape, and you need to start looking at injection issues, or electrical issues. Eagle
If it runs okay for about 2 miles, then starts acting funny, think oxygen sensor. The O2 sensor isn't used when the vehicle is warming up -- the ECU operates in open loop mode w/o input from the O2 sensor. Once the temperature reaches about 165 degrees, the ECU switches over to closed loop mode and starts reacting to sensor inputs.
pingpong
I would look for the tell tale signs of a head gasket before I jump on that. You know water in your oil.. Unkown cause of lossing water. Things like that... then I would have my cooling system pressure checked, then I would do a compression check on the whole motor, to make sure it wasnt something like that

Keats
wow great story... so i'm on my way to take my rig to the shop. all the sudden I have no resistance to the gas pedal. great. call up my buddy, he towed me to the walmart parking lot down the road. left it there for a few days, kicked it, swore at it, etc. then i had my buddy tow me to the shop a few days later. throttle cable snapped, shifter broke(wouldnt go into any gear), transfer case rusted, fuel pump was my original problem. long story short, $600 later i'm up and running like a champ! now all i need is a muffler.
