new owner. need a little help

Recommended Posts

Ok so i just acquired a 1986 4wd Comanche. Its five speed 2.5 motor with the good tranny from what ive read. It has been running very well except for a few problems. I was told this was a new clutch, new this, new that. I would like to get this thing in top running condition for my DD. List of problems is as follows

I think i have a vaccum leak on my brake booster as there is a loud hissing noise behind my brake until i push down on it and it stops, same for gas pedal if its to the floor the hiss stops.

My clutch has some issues. I'm not leaking any fluid what so ever anywhere, but it will not shift into gear for at least 5 min. You almost have to lovingly talk to it and pump the clutch enough then it goes in, and it will shift perfect until you shut it off and let it sit for a while. Then when first started same thing, but then shifts fine after a few miles of shifting.

Loud noise while driving sounds like maybe wheel hubs??/bearing?? loud while driving straight but louder/grindyer if turning wheel to the right or left. its not rpm related just simply while driving

also on my trans. there is a hole on the passenger side of it that is just a hole. its not threaded. should there be a plug of some sort in it?

sorry for such a long post just tryiing to figure it out.

Thanks again, I'm so glad i found this place!!

I just swapped the booster on my MJ, it did the same thing until I tightened the four nuts that hold the booster to the firewall. Check these in the pic below and ensure they're tight, not super tight, just snug....then check for leaks in the hose and grommets that connect to the booster (in the engine bay).

There should not be a hole in the side of the transmission that allows you to "see" inside the case. Sounds like a plug is missing, not sure though...there should be two plugs on the side of the tranny. One to fill it and one to drain it. The fill plug is higher than the drain plug. If the lower plug is missing then get a plug immediately (someone here should be able to tell you what the thread is, I don't know off hand but it should be the same as the other plug) get a cheap lube pump which is available at any auto parts store and pump fluid in until it flows out of the higher plug. Then your trans if full. I hope that's not the grinding noise you hearing.
