rworks
OK, 4x4 87 Shortbed with 4.0 and AW4. Engine is from a 01 Grand Cherokee (about 40k miles) and tranny is from a 94 XJ. In drive and under power its making a wocka-wocka kind of noise, more pronounced when in a turn or on an uneven road. Does it and out of 4WD. And when I shift into Neutral while rolling and give it some gas, I get the same noise. No noise when I let up on the gas or am coasting. I'm not good at diagnosing noises, but this one sounds rotational as opposed to an up/down noise. I know I'm not giving a good amount of info on the noise. I've been under the truck and given everything I could find a good shake and put a wrench on everything and its all tight. I have a few ideas for what it might be, though. Torqe converter? Crankshaft bearings? Motor mounts? Transmission and/or motor loose? Driveshaft out of balance/round? Ideas?
Geonovast
Pop the front driveshaft out and see if you still get it. Also check the wheel U-joints.
Oizarod115
jack the front end and check wheel bearing play by wiggling the wheels up and down left and right. also check the rear axle too, sounds like it could be a rear- wheel bearing.
1974CJ5
And when I shift into Neutral while rolling and give it some gas, I get the same noise. No noise when I let up on the gas or am coasting. This sentence makes me think it can't be drive shaft, or wheel bearings or anything not rpm dependent. I would probably start by seeing if maybe it has something to do with the power steering since you said it seems to intensify when turning. I am not much real help with your problem, just thought the previous posters missed that sentence. (cause I too was thinking wheel bearing until then)
Geonovast
To see if it's either the motor or something on the motor, make sure it's completely cold, pop the belt off, and start it up. Rev it up a few times, and see if you hear the noise.
