A few questions

Recommended Posts

Currently fixing my damaged front end, and was wondering how to remove the hood release cable where it meets the 2 rods up on the front of the hood. Also, the puller fan. I remove the 4 bolts in the back, an the fan is loose, but not sure how to get the front piece off, the circle shaped thing with grooves in it. Thanks in advance

That thing with the grooves be the viscous fan clutch. If you removed the four nuts then its just a case of pulling it off the hub by prying between the fan pulley and fan hub. Slight pounding on the back of the fan near its center may help break it loose. Just don't bend things. I've had sucess by just grabing the fan and shaking the h--- out of it while pulling outward. I think the fan shroud has to come out or at least be removed and shoved back over the fan blades and lifted out with the fan & clutch. Once the fan is out you can R&R the clutch.

The fan blade and shroud have to come out together. Can't get one without the other. Not enough room. Look at the bracket holding the outer sheath of the release cable. There is a cutout in it. The cable can be pried out thru that opening. If it's loose I have done it with my bare fingers. If it's tight use a screw driver. Pry on the outer covering. Not the cable itself. On the end of the cable is a roll pin. There is a slot in the hood release. move the cable 90 degrees and line it up with the slot. Move the pin to one side. It will come out.

So from what it seems like to me, the whole puller fan assembly just sits on the rod connected to the pulley? There are four bolts holding the fan itself, but nothing holding anything else on. Should i just take off the whole pulley?

Behind the fan there are four nuts that bolt it down to the pulley. Remove those four nuts and try to pull the fan off. It may require some convincing since there is a shaft nub in the middle that fits kind of tight. I usually use a rubber mallet and lightly tap on the backside of the fan until I can get some separation between the pulley and the fan clutch mounting base, then I can get a prybar in there to pull it off the rest of the way if it's really stuck. It sounds to me like you removed the four bolts that hold the actual fan blades to the fan clutch. Removing those will just make removing the whole assembly a bigger pain in the rear since the fan blade will be flopping all over the place as you try to remove the four nuts on the pulley. I'd recommend putting those bolt back in for easier access to the pulley nuts.

If you're trying to remove the hood release cable itself, then you need to gently push up on the black plastic portion of the cable at the end where it is slotted to fit into the hood bracket. Once the cable is free, you can manuever it any way you wish to get the cylinder at the end of the cable out of the lever arm it sits in.
