How bad broken is this?

I got the dash off of the '97 today and found this broken piece on the heater box:

There is a similar one underneath that moves the shutter, but what does this one do and can it be fixed? It looks like it broke on the end, but I don't know the natural orientation to reassemble it.

you should ask over at naxja. most guys over here havent done the dash swap.

Looks to me like a broken mode door shaft. If so, youre pretty much screwed. If you have the unit out of the truck, pull the unit top off and check the mode doors there. At the very least, youll need a new door put in, at most you might need a whole new housing. Good luck

Great. I looked today and its the shutter on the top. Its always down. Hopefully I can get a better look at it once I get it out of the truck.
