Rear Brakes not working

Recommended Posts

Replaced everything in the rear, New seals, bearings, backing plates, drum kit, shoes, rotors, brake lines ect ect ect. original master cyc front valve, and the thing in the back,.... height or load valve I think.

So I had a panic stop a few days back,... notice the truck took a bit more distance to to stop than I feel comfortable with. My Ebrake needed adjusting anyway so we took a look at it. Jacked up the back, adjusted the cable for the Ebrake on the bracket under the bed and with the little metal wheels inside the backing plate. Wheels still turn with a bit of effort,... this with the Ebrake to the floor. So tried the main brake,.... same result. The wheels spin with the same resistance or lack there of

Bled the line,... a little air in there. Started the truck to get the booster/vacuum going. No good,... wheels can be turned by hand without a lot of effort. More difficult to turn them backwards than forwards. :hmm: I'm stuck,... don't know what else to try here.

Bad valve somewhere?

I don't think those rear brakes have worked for quite a while,... just haven't gotten around to it. Figured it was stopping pretty well I'll play with them later. The near fender bender put it up towards the top of list though. That and the E-brake can't stop a stiff breeze.

I did try the star wheel,..... cranked on it for a while,.... no effect. the main brake will not stop the rear wheels either.

jacked up the back started the truck in neutral, stomped on the main brakes and the rear wheels could still be turned by hand. Bled the lines,... no effect :dunno:

If you have the e-brake adjusted and they don't work that well either it is inside the drum. Pull the wheels and drums and see what you have. Pads or drums may be worn, check to see if the star wheel is working (each turns a different way), or parts missing. There is the flat bar between the pas that may have slipped/fell out.
