XXLMJ Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 I have a 89 4.0 Renix motor out of a Cherokee for sale. A guy wants to buy it and put into his 78 CJ5 Does anybody know what the difference is, he is wondering if the heads are the same? And could he bolt his intake and carb to my Head? His motor is a 258 4.2. I'm not sure if he plans on using the whole motor or just the head, so the question is will and intake from a 4.2 bolt to a renix 4.0? Thanks again
Garvin Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 A lot of people with the 4.2L will buy the head and intake to convert it to fuel injection. If I remember correctly, the 4.2 and 4.0 are the same minus the crank and rods. I know everything on the outside swaps between them. The budget build 4.5 stroker is just a 4.0 with 4.2 crank and rods.
XXLMJ Posted August 16, 2010 Author Posted August 16, 2010 Ok so you could bolt on a intake and carb to a 4.0 from the 4.2 and it should work. Thanks for the help
Garvin Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 http://jeep.off-road.com/jeep/news/42l- ... 29337.html That's a great link about the head conversion if you're interested in reading material. I did a little research on google about the intakes and one person says it will fit with minor modifications and the other says it's a direct bolt up. So if you have the skills to install the engine, swapping the intake manifold over won't be an issue.
XXLMJ Posted August 16, 2010 Author Posted August 16, 2010 Wow thanks thats really interesting, 40hp out of doing that swap is really cool!
johnj92131 Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 The smart thing to do is use the long stroke crank from the 4.2 in place of the short stroke crank of the 4.0 in the 4.0 blockand head. that gives you 4.5 ltrs displacement. search: Jeep Stroker for all the details. JJ
shark Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 lots of info here: www.jeepstrokers.com theres a forum on the head conversion.
