Cut it higher, weld the bottom up so nothing gets inside, and put the cap back on

not bad, an easier solution would be to cut out the infected area and cut a peice of scrap sheet to fit and self-tap screw the new panel over the area and reinstall the cap.

Actually, your method just promotes more rust in that area.

i didnt say it was better. just easier. i def agree in welding in a new panel, then prep and paint but thats not always easy for the average DIY'er. there is a way to do what i suggested to deter rust as well.

Oh. I mean cut the corner out at the lowest body line and weld in a flat plate on the bottom where you cut. That area on an xj is just as bad as wheel wells on an mj for rust

Iwill try to get pictures tomorrow. Does local auto part stores some rust preventer that works. I had the same idea as you suggested only thing i wasnt going to do was paint it. I was going to cut out rust put new patch panel on. Then spray rust preventer then primer then spray bedliner on it. Then put factory end cap back on. Would this work. thanks
