jimoshel
I'm in the process of changing a water pump on a 1988 4.0. As anyone who's ever done this knows, it's necessary to remove the power steering pump first. I got everything removed and the water pump replaced and am in the process of putting everything back together. How in hades do you start the 4 bolts directly behind the pulley that holds the pump to the 'C' bracket-brace? There is a 1/2 in space between the rear of the pulley and the brace. I have 3/4 inch fingers. I just finally drilled a hole in the pulley big enough to clear a 13mm socket and am doing it that way. There has to be a better way. The book is no help. It just says "remove the PS pump" Any help appreciated. Jim :dunno: :???:
fiatslug87
From what I remember, I only remove the pivot bolt, the 2 rear pump to bracket bolts (figure 47) and the two bolts to the left of the adjustment bolt (figure 46) and remove the PS pump and bracket as a unit, the C-bracket comes with it. ParadiseMJ
I've never had to remove the whole pump, but, the top right bolt (13mm?)on the water pump screws in to the P/S bracket. All I've ever done is to loosen the 1/2" bolts on the "C" so there's a little wiggle room to slide the water pump out once you've removed the other W/P mounting bolts (including the one that screws in to the P/S bracket). I already have the pivot bolt loosened and I can move it juuust enough to get the WP out. I only discovered this when I was changing the WP and P/S pump on the same day and did them in the wrong order.
jimoshel
Thanks for the tips guys. I got it. Wish now I'd asked BEFORE I started. There is a bolt going thru the PS mounting bracket into the Intake manifold. It is directly behind the PS pump making it necessary to remove the Pump to get to it. With this bolt in place there is no way to get enough wiggle room to remove the water pump. By following the above suggestion, the PS pump can be removed without having to seperate it from the 'C' bracket, which was my initial mistake.
