Will a snap-on solis scanner hook up to an 89 MJ?

Nope. The RENIX models don't even have a check engine light in the way you think of one. It doesn't store codes, or anything like that. IIRC, all it is, is an emissions light.

I need to check my trans solenoids and that stuff to see whats wrong. My trans shifts fine manually but when in OD it slips from 1-2

You can check that by pinning out the trans connector, and measuring the ohms of the solenoids. Someone else will have to chime in here about that.
