creekscout
Ok, another question regarding replacing the 904 transmission in a '86 2wd mj. I found someone who has a good 904 transmission from a '86 xj, but it was 4wd and only the transmission is there. I could put the tailshaft from my 904 onto it, but I am thinking about locating a transfer case and putting that onto it and installing it that way so that in the future if I want to go to 4wd I will only have to swap out the front axle. My question about this route is will my 2wd driveshaft fit or will I need to find a 4wd shaft? What transfer case came on the back of the torqueflite transmission? Geonovast
If the 904 is like pretty much every other trans out there, you couldn't simply put your tail housing on it. The output shaft will also be different (2wd one is most likely shorter, and won't have provisions for the speedometer gears) I would just get yourself a T-case and a shorter rear shaft. The 904 would have had an NP 207 for part time, and a 228 or 229 for full time. I have heard that the 904 has a 23 spline output, but never verified it. dasbulliwagen
Did some research on 904's yesterday, and also saw that they were 23 spline.
