jteckmann
Does anyone have a pic or diagram of how the brake light switch on an '86 goes together and attaches to the pedal? I think at some point a new switch was installed on mine. Problem is that it keeps working lose and falling out of position. Obviously, no brake working brake lights at random times is a hazzard. I've tried tightening it down, using a lock washer and threadlock on the bolts, but it always works lose eventually. I just want to make sure that I have the right switch under there, or aren't missing any pieces. Any tips on how to align the thing and make it stay in place? Backroads
On my 86 its actually attatched to the back of the pedal where it connects to the arm on the master cylinder. There is a slightly oblong 0 hole in the linkage, the switch bolts through that hole where the pedal connects and as you depress the pedal, it clicks the switch on and off. Yours should be the same unless it was changed out. Its a pretty finicky design and if anyones messed with it...extremely easy to screw it up and not have it work. THe only real fix would be to put a later style switch in there that activated when the pedal is pushed in further and hits a switch mounted to the firewall beneath the pedal. fiatslug87
From the '90 FSM, the '86 parts manual shows the exact same set up.
maddzz1
If your truck is a standard you can swap a barke pedal with the newer style switch from a late model XJ, thats what I did when I put the 95-96 double booster in. If you have an automatic its harder because the shift cable goes thru the bracket the pedal attaches too.
jteckmann
Thanks, fiatslug! Pretty sure mine's missing one of the spacers. I'll be taking it apart tonight and see if I can't finally get it fixed.
