low volt with a/c on

my 89 mjs batt gauge stays close to 14 volts while its runnin. lights on ect. but when i turn on the a/c it drops pretty low. close to 9 volts. thats a big drop for just a a/c clutch to kick in. i can turn just the hearter on and it stays the same. any ideas? :dunno:

verify the voltage with a multi meter on the battery, my voltmeter in the cluster drops around 12 sometimes, but the alternator is charging fine when you install real test equipment on it. the gauge cluster can be erroneous
