maddzz1
If my CAD isnt working and I put my MJ in 4WD, does this mean I actually have 3WD? pass side front not working? or am I still in 2WD?
Geonovast
If the CAD does not engage, neither of the front wheels will have power, unless you have a locker up front.
maddzz1
If the cad only locks the pass side 2 piece axle shaft together. Then wouldnt the drivers side and inner pass side be spun when the front drive shaft starts spinning? When you pull the TC into 4WD?
Geonovast
You're not too familar with the inner workings off an open differential are ya? Yes, the inner shaft would spin the correct direction, but neither wheel would actually receive power if it were to need it. If you removed your rear driveshaft, left the CAD unlocked, put it in 4wd, and tried to drive away, you wouldn't go anywhere. The spider gears would just cause the inner shaft to spin. The R&P would be spinning, 3 of the 4 spiders, and the inner shaft. That's it.
boomer1
Ya when you put it in 4 wheel drive the front carrier will spin but the spider gears will allow the disconnected shaft to spin and not the drivers tire. Like they said unless you have a locker type in the front there will be no movement from the front tires. torque goes toward the path of least resistance. in this case the shaft that doesnt have a tire attached to it would get everything and the drivers shaft would get none. Geonovast
It's hard to explain. Best way to understand it would be to pop your diff cover off, leave the T-case in 2wd, crawl under the front of the truck, and turn the driveshaft by hand. That'll show you exactly how it works. maddzz1
I understand now. Its like when one tire is off the ground and all the power is sent to that wheel , so you can't go anywhere. I thought taht was with a LSD tho, not an open diff
Geonovast
Nope... LSD (Limited Slip Differential) is what allows you to still power both when one has much less resistance than the other. It can still act like an open if there's a lot less resistance to one side. That's why when the clutch packs in the LSD wear out, it acts like a regular open diff.
