transmission question....May be a Duh!??

Recommended Posts

Man I just don't know this for some reason! :wall: I am trying to sell (locally) an AW4 transmission I pulled from a '92 Cherokee Sport 2 wheel drive and I had a guy want it but he has a 4x4. Did they use the same tranny for the auto and the 4x4? I know transfer case.....

Guess not ever having a 4x4 Comanche or Cherokee, I never really thought about. Couldn't really find the info I wanted on the web. Sooooo, what's the answer? Do I get to call the guy back and sell it, or wait for the next guy to come along?

Thanks for your help!

it is not the same trans obviously because the 2x4 has the output for a rear driveshaft, and a 4x4 has an output for a tcase. having never done it i'm not 100% all you'd have to do is change the tailhousing between the two, someone here will be able to say for sure shortly.

Yes you can change the tailhousings but the output shaft may have to be cut. I just changed my AW-4 2wd cherokee to 4wd without changing the tranny, just the tailhousing. So you have to take the tailhousings off both transmissions, measure the 4wd and cut the 2wd to the same length with a saw-zaw and then file down the edges. Thats what I did and mine works great. But I used to work at a transmission shop so I have no problems tearing one down. But be careful cause the shafts HAVE to be the exact length.
