Ignition Lock Binding up

Recommended Posts

Well I've really screwed something up :wall: (previous post "smoke signals from steering column " . I determined the wiper switch was the problem , so I've replaced that and the wipers are working fine BUT....now the ignition lock is binding up badly , key doesn't return after "start" , lock release lever is very stiff ," accessory " position doesn't function .Can anybody show me how to solve this ? :dunno: .....Thanks , Gord

I assume you meant that it won't go past RUN. If it went past start, I would be very concerned.

I did not read your other post yet but if you had electrical issues which caused smoke to rise form the steering column, I would suggest that the plastic parts of your ignition or even the contacts inside the ignition switch are melted. This would require a replacement of the ignition switch.

If that isnt the issue, I would take apart the plastic casing around the steering column and make sure you are not pinching a wire.

I guess I could have worded it better . What I meant was the key normally would spring back to" run " , but now I have to turn it back manually to dis-engage the starter motor . Any tips on removing the the plastic columb covers , busted out the back side of the wiper pod (not on purpose ) while trying to separate the two pieces .

 Thanks , I'll give it another try this weekend . I think I may have dislodged the ignition actuater rod or mis-clocked the key lock tumbler on my last go 'round with this "repair" . By the way , where are you in B.C. ?

Those two pieces have slots for a screwdriver to fit into and you can pry them apart that way. They are stubborn but look for the slots with a flashlight.

Mine actually had screws. I've seen it all though.

We are talking a saginaw column here right? There's no prying any column cover off of it if you want it to go back on. You have to remove the wheel, clock spring, turn signal ring, ignition key, and hazard pull knob to get the top plastic off. The only part that will come off is the one he popped off by accident and that is not the way it was intended.

Sounds to me that either the key switch may not have the retaining screw in it, which is allowing the whole thing to turn or something is mis-aligned. Did you have this thing completely apart? Did you make sure this little piece got put back in right?

It's important as it works in conjuction with the key switch.

Here's a good link that shows how to take apart and put the columns back together.

That is indeed a good link ....if you have a "tilt column " mine is not , they're simular but the housings for one are quite different . The key buzzer thing , stayed put (Ithink) and yes it was pretty much completely apart , except the column shrouds (different design than tilt -2 pc. versus 3 pc. shown on link )which stubbornly refused to part (yes I removed the 4 screws ) :hmm:

My bad. I assumed you had a tilt because you said you busted out the piece behind the multifunction stalk. I figured you just over stated by saying busted, but you really did. As the non-tilt that I have that piece is with the column piece and not separate like the tilt's.

Here's a link that may help a little. It's on swapping the lock cylinder for non-tilts. I can see the four screws that you're refering to, I think.

:D Thanks for that new link , while I was going thru it I had a flash-back to the dis-assembly and I think I might have popped the key-lock barrel out with the key in the "lock" position rather than "on-run" position . In any case I'll be tearing it apart again this week-end so your link will be good reference . Gord
