Peug to AW4 conversion

Recommended Posts

I did a search but couldn't find anything.

I have the Peug 5spd in my MJ(88) but have an XJ(98) with a cracked head that I am going to part out.

I was thinking about putting the AW4 from the XJ into the MJ. Is it an unbolt straight swap or is it much more involved than that?

I like the 5spd just fine but it doesn't work too well on boat ramps....

I did it......it sucked.

I would never recommend doing it again.

Quite a bit of work and a LOT of parts needed. The steering column/brake pedal/shifter swap was less fun than stabbing the tranny.

The 98 tranny will be fine. Your steering column will be suspect due to the wiring being different.

Make sure you can read wiring schematics well. ;)

What problems did you have with the wiring? Did you end up going with a column shift or something?

The biggest problem you will have is that the '98 does not have a separate TCU, it is integrated with the engine computer. The transmission wiring is different from the earlier AW4s so it isn't as easy as finding an earlier TCU and plugging it in. I don't know for sure, but you may be able to swap the transmission wiring from an early AW4 over.

Besides that, it is fairly easy. You just need to swap over all the brackets, linkage, transfer case, etc. from the donor.

You may want to check with NWPhotog. I sold him an engine and transmission from a '98 that he was able to get to work. I don't know the details, but I don't think he had too many problems.

You also need to swap the Throttle bodies over on the renix era motors. you wil need all the shifter linkage for the t-case. The TCU for renix era aw4's is under the glove box on the panel at knee hieght. You should have it on your rig anyways. You will need the wiring for it though. I would definately look into an aftermarket shifter for ease of swap.

The throttle bodies don't necessarily need to be swapped, just a couple of holes tapped for a sensor. I think it was the TPS, but don't remember for sure.

He has a manual. It does not have the Renix AW4 TCU.

No problems other than the reverse lights (haven't found it easily nor have I put much effort into that one).

I did the floor shifter. I have two TCs so I thought the floor would be A-OK. I really need to make a photo journal of what I have done (seems like everything).

I am still not convinced my torque converter locks but I am changing the tires this weekend and they should be easier to push and smoother than what I have been driving around with. I will test it more and then figure it out.

I hooked the reverse lights up to a switch. Besides that I haven't done much with them either.

I swapped the throttle body as well for one from an auto. It was just easier.

I was swapping out a 91 2 litre/AW4 for the 98 4 litre/AW4. I had to change the sensor on the tail shaft and the rear electrical plug.

That's good to know. I had wondered if it was just as easy as swapping over the wiring and sensors.
