Puritan21
1989 pioneer 2wd 5-speed 4.0 All right, where to begin.........If you've read my thread I am putting a truck back together (enginewise). I hooked up my used ebay fuel injectors to find out that my rail was leaking....(gas spraying all over everything. So I put the fuel rail on that the injectors came from and...no leak. Yay!! Now it still won't start. Checked for spark and it has a nice big fat blue spark. I pulled distributor and made sure timing was correct....still no luck. It cranks and cranks but won't start. I sprayed a little bit of carb cleaner in the throttle body, but wouldn't even burn it. Not sure where to check next.....I don't have any coolant in the block, just wanted to fire it up for a few seconds to make sure it would run????? First thought was the neutral safety switch, but it cranks whether the pedal is down or not??
jpdocdave
ya, not the nss if it cranks. you say you have good spark, what about fuel pressure. the old see if it runs off carb cleaner doesn't always work these days. also check for injector pulse, and does your engine have compression? and your firing order is right? Puritan21
Whats an easy way to check injector pulse? Firing order, I checked several times. I'll have to check compression. Thanks
Eagle
When you checked for timing, did you make certain that the #1 piston was on the compression stroke when the #1 sparkplug fired? Don't forget it's a 4-stroke engine. It's an easy thing to put the distributor in 180-degrees out of phase, so it's trying to fire on the exhaust stroke rather than the compression stroke. I've tried it several times and I haven't gotten one to run like that yet.
Puritan21
When I checked the #1, I put my finger near the hole and felt the air coming out right before TDC.
Puritan21
I checked the camshaft positioning sensor and the crank positioning sensor.......both are putting out the correct voltage and pulsing the injectors, however after cranking for a minute, there is not much fuel on the spark plugs? Eagle
When in doubt, resort to old-fashioned (crude) methods. Pull the spark plugs, squirt a small amount of gas into each hole (a half eyedropper in each should do it), reinstall the spark plugs, and try it. It should fire on that much gas. If it does, you'll know your ignition is good and that you have to focus on fuel delivery. How's the pressure in the fuel rail?
Puritan21
Wooooohooooooo!!!! Finally got it running......put in a new distributor and made sure I was at TDC (again)....and she fired right up, first crank!!!!! The whole neighborhood heard me yelling!! Thanks for all the tips, fellas I appreciate it
