AW4 Compatibility questions

I'm looking at buying a 4wd AW4 from a 97 xj. Will this work in my 1988 2wd AW4 4.0 MJ?

 

I just need to know if I will run into any wiring troubles with it being newer. I can grab the whole trans wiring harness if that would make my life easier?

The wiring is different on '97+ XJ AW4s. It will not plug in to the connectors from your '88. I don't know if you can swap over the sensors from the '88 to the '97. I don't think there would be any problem with the NSS, but I have no idea with the other wiring bundle.

 

There also is no separate transmission computer, it is controlled by the ECU. This would prevent you from swapping over all the transmission electronics from the '97 to the '88.

Are you doing a 4WD conversion? The 2WD and 4WD trannys are different also.

Also the output spline counts are different among the early/later years. So if your converting to 4WD you'll need the transfer case along with the tranny and not[ an older (later than 1990) transfer case.

Thanks guys. I am doing the 4wd conversion, which is why I'm looking for a 4wd tranny. I have acess to several spare NP231s, with both spline counts.

 

I was mostly concerned with the wiring. I just found a '96 tranny for $50, so I think I'll pick that up.
