MJ300
Basically it's just a plug and play swap, all you need to do is swap the temperature and oil pressure sensors. They're not that expensive and the swap itself is very easy to do.
JeepcoMJ
86 gauges only work with 84-early 87 jeeps. you need 87-90 gauges.

Lenard
ok thanks, i can just go to the auto store and get one of those three in one set of gages and hook it up to right?
Geonovast
No auto store will carry a gauge cluster. You'll need to either get one online (I'm sure someone here has one) or get one from a boneyard.

Geonovast
You mean the 86 in an 88? Electronics are different.

You'll need to either get one online (I'm sure someone here has one) or get one from a boneyard. he means one of those little combination clusters with the oil pressure, temp, and volt meter. Lenard, yes that will work. but it's mechanical gauges, meaning that you will have to figure out how to drill and tap for those locations and make them work. Just put a wanted ad in the classifieds section and buy a factory cluster from an 87-90. I just sold one for like $35. that's about what you'd pay for the 3-in-1 with everything you'd need, and a factory install is half the headache. remember though, you will need to get the factory oil pressure and temperature sensors to make it work. Eagle
86 gauges only work with 84-early 87 jeeps. you need 87-90 gauges. Why? My friend in Greece used a cluster out of an '89 Comanche 4.0L in his '84 Cherokee 2.5L. The only thing he had to do was adjust the potentiometer on the tach. On the '86 cluster, there isn't a potentiometer, so the tach will read correctly only if both engines are 6-cyl or both engines are 4-cyl. The other gauges will be fine, but the speedo cable connection will probably be different.

You didn't mention if you had a column shift or a floor shift. I assume if youve got idiot light cluster you have a column shift, mine did. I don't believe the gauge clusters every came with a PRNDL. Some gauge clusters came with the mount posts for a PRNDL. Just take the face panel off the cluster and you'll be able to tell. Careful measuring and you can cut an opening in the tach face for the PRNDL and an opening for the cable in the housing and install the parts from your panel. Looks like factory
